한 아일랜드 신부님의 詩가
전세계로 퍼져나가며
코로나바이러스로 불안과 두려움에 지친
수많은 사람들에게
잔잔한 위로가 되고 있습니다.

아일랜드의 프란치스코회 수사신부인
리차드 핸드릭 신부님의 격리(Lockdown)라는
따뜻한 시입니다.

격리 (Lockdown)

예, 두려움이 있습니다.
예, 고립이 있습니다.
예, 두려움의 사재기가 있습니다.
예, 질병이 있습니다.
예, 심지어 죽음도 있습니다.
그러나
몇 년 동안 소음 가득하던 우한에서는
새소리를 다시 들을 수 있다고 합니다.
정적이 흐른 지 단 몇 주 만에
하늘은 더 이상 매연으로 덮이지 않고
푸른색과 회색으로 맑아졌다고 합니다.
아시시의 거리에서는
텅빈 광장을 사이에 두고
각자 창문을 열어놓고는
서로 노래를 불러주고 있다고 합니다.
홀로 있는 이들이
주위 가족들의 소리를 들을 수 있게 하려는 것입니다.
아일랜드 서부의 한 호텔은
집에 묶여 있는 사람들에게
무상 음식을 배달해 준다고 합니다.
오늘 제가 아는 한 젊은 여성은
이웃들에게 자신의 전화번호가 적힌
전단지를 전하느라 바쁩니다.
노인들이 도움을 청할 수 있게 하려는 것입니다.
오늘 교회와 유대교 회당, 이슬람 모스크와 불교의 절들이
집 없는 사람들, 아픈 사람들, 지친 사람들을
맞아들여 쉴 곳을 제공할 준비를 하고 있습니다.
온 세상 사람들이 속도를 늦추고 생각에 잠깁니다.
온 세상 사람들이 새로운 방식으로 이웃을 바라봅니다.
온 세상 사람들이 새로운 현실에 눈을 뜨고 있습니다.
우리가 정말로 얼마나 큰지
우리가 정말로 통제할 수 있는 것이 얼마나 적은지
정말로 중요한 것이 무엇인지,
사랑에 눈을 뜨고 있습니다.
그러므로 우리는 다음과 같이 기억하며 기도합니다.
예, 두려움이 있습니다.
그러나 미워할 필요는 없습니다.
예, 고립이 있습니다.
그러나 외로워할 필요는 없습니다.
예, 두려움의 사재기가 있습니다.
그러나 인색할 필요는 없습니다.
예, 질병이 있습니다.
그러나 영혼까지 아플 필요는 없습니다.
예, 심지어 죽음도 있습니다.
그러나 언제나 사랑은 다시 태어날 수 있습니다.
오늘, 숨을 쉬세요.
들으세요, 그대의 공포가 만들어낸 소음 뒤로
새들은 다시 노래하고
하늘은 맑아지고
봄이 오고 있습니다.
그리고 우리는 언제나 사랑으로 에워싸여 있습니다.
그대 영혼의 창문을 여십시오.
그대가 비록
빈 광장 너머 만날 수는 없더라도
노래를 부르십시오.

Lockdown

Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.
